Christie wants to put gay marriage rights to a popular vote-and says that it is too bad Mississippi and Alabama could not have had state referenda on civil rights for African Americans in the 1960s. A Rich Election: Big Picture 02/01/12

On last night's The Big Picture Thom Hartmann explained how interest groups and the wealthy people giving to those special interest groups are running this election. He illustrated that point by first showing the decrease in spending by candidates in political ads from 2008. The candidates spent $48.7 million at this point in 2008. This year they have spent $13.7 million. That is because special interest group's spending has gone up from $1.8 million at this point in 2008 to $15.2 million this year (a 1600% increase in the amount of ads run).

Refugee

This is a video for a song about a refugee. According to a recent U.N. High Commission for Refugees study, nearly one half of the world's refugees are from Afghanistan and Iraq. And then there are the ones who didn't survive to become refugees. The images used for this video were gathered for a multi-media show called, Occupied. Leralee Whittle and I created that show in 2008 about the US occupations of Iraq, Afghanistan/Pakistan and American minds. This song and the images used are about Iraqi refugees.

Occupy G8: Big Picture 01/27/12

Adbusters has called on 50,000 people from around the planet to occupy a summit by the G8 and NATO. Adbusters put a list of demands in their call to occupy the summit. Some occupy protesters didn't take well to the news that Adbusters spoke for the movement. They also blame Adbusters for taking credit for the occupation, even though it has already been in the works. Some occupiers hold to a commitment for the movement to remain leaderless and fear that Adbusters infringed on that.
