census
GRITtv: Mar. 30 2010
Rep. Michelle Bachmann has publicly stated that she will not fill out her census form completely, expressing concerns about the census being part of a larger effort at voter fraud led by, you guessed it, ACORN. Of course, there are other communities who have long had reasons to distrust government officials asking for their information. As the deadline for filling out census forms approaches, we check in with Rob Robinson of the Right to the City Alliance, who are part of the "Yes We Count" campaign, and Baratunde Thurston of The Onion and Jack and Jill Politics, on why filling out that form matters. Thanks to New America Media and Color of Change for the video in this segment. This week in Washington, D.C., the Haiti Donors Conference will discuss rebuilding and continued aid to the earthquake-ravaged nation. Health advocate Marie St. Cyr just returned from Haiti, where she has family, and joined us before the conference to discuss what Haiti really needs from those donors. Kate Clinton signs up in solidarity with Catholic nuns: not only did they take on Bart Stupak and anti-healthcare Republicans, they also aren't afraid of the Pope. In addition to joining our census conversation today, Baratunde Thurston gave us this video interview with Robin Stanback Stevens, a friend of his, who discusses five concrete benefits she's seen since the inauguration of Barack Obama. Finally, we knew the Republican party recruited Michael Steele to widen its appeal. We just didn't know how wide they meant to go.

Are we possibly going to see an end to the endless health care debate this weekend? With recent reports saying Dennis Kucinich has decided to vote for the bill, signs are pointing to yes. But without a public option, is this really health care reform we can believe in? Here to discuss--and make us laugh at--the fate of the bill, financial reform, and who the members of Congress are that we can count on to keep fighting for better reform is Stephanie Miller, host of The Stephanie Miller Show. Kate Clinton is back with a serious call: to fill out your census form and show America that gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people are diverse, live all over the country, and have families. Check out our Take Action link for more! Recently, we featured the documentary American Radical: The Trials of Norman Finkelstein, a documentary about scholar and professor Norman Finkelstein's struggles with the larger intellectual community--and the U.S.'s Israel policy. Finkelstein joins us to talk about the film, the current state of U.S./Israel relations, and his new book. Published by Or Books, This Time We Went Too Far explores the possibility that the December 2008 invasion of Gaza has caused a significant shift in the international community--including the American Jewish community--opinion of Israel. Finally, Laura discusses the real "femivore's dilemma."

Not long ago on GRITtv, Hamid Dabashi told us that the Iranian protests are turning into a civil rights movement with long-term potential for change. Wel talk to Hooman Majd, author of The Ayatollah Begs to Differ: The Paradox of Modern Iran, Hadi Ghaemi, director of the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran, and Kelly Golnoush Niknejad of Tehran Bureau about the protests, the regime, and what happens next. On Jan. 29, Barack Obama took questions from House Republicans at their "issues retreat," televised on CSPAN. David Corn of Mother Jones joins Laura via Skype to explain why he thinks more events like this can make the political debate in Washington and around the country better. The Winter Olympics are headed to Vancouver, British Columbia, but activists are pointing out the way international sporting events lead to police crackdowns and displacement of locals. Thanks to our friends at the Vancouver Media Cooperative for the video. The 2010 census is starting up, and as New America Media shares, for Southeast Asian community, organizers are making sure that they get the proper representation, and not undercounted. Did you know that in Utah, you're more likely to get chlamydia than the chicken pox or the flu? Well, a Republican State Senator, who says he's from the most conservative part of the state, is leading the fight to allow teachers to teach contraception. Health care reform isn't dead yet, and a coalition of progressive groups, including Bold Progressives and Democracy for America, are increasing the pressure in Washington for Democrats to pass reform--by any means necessary. Finally, in this new documentary, filmmakers David Ridgen and Nicholas Rossier follow Norman Finkelstein, the son of Holocaust survivors called a self-hating Jew for his response to Israeli and US policy over Palestine, around the world in pursuit of his principles.
