A U.S. Senate committee drops two amendments to protect LGBT youth and ALL youth from bullying, but Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) talks about WHY it is so important. Good news for students in Bangor, PA, Hartford, CT and Monroe County, TN. Westchester, NY reveals the names and photos of men caught in a sex sting in a park--though records were supposed to be sealed and most were convicted of nothing more than "disorderly conduct." Denmark will move to open marriage to same-sex couples--22 years after being the first country to offer legal recognition to gay partners. The "Hide/Seek" exhibit that was censored in Washington, DC by the Smithsonian will be mounted intact starting November 18th at the Brooklyn Museum. Andy reviews "Southern Comfort," a new musical about transgender folk in Georgia starring Annette O'Toole as a trans-man and "Asuncion" at the Cherry Lane by "Social Network" star Jesse Eisenberg who plays the lead as well. The North Carolina legislature votes to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot in 2012 to ban legal recognition of same-sex marriage and other relationships. Gov. Jan Brewer of AZ continues to fight treating state employees fairly. US Senator Barbara Mikulski comes out-for repealing DOMA.A rash of killings and beatings of transgendered people in D.C. in what activists call a transgender community in crisis. A high school in TN is blocking formation of a GSA on campus. Arthur Evans, one of the true pioneers of the modern LGBT movement, dies in San Francisco. Britain will lift the lifetime ban on gay men from donating blood, but some restrictions remain. A breakthrough using HIV to cure cancer. Men with HIV are at increased risk for transmitting Hepatitis C sexually. The American Psychiatric Association says it is OK for kids to watch Chaz Bono on "Dancing with the Stars"

Happy LGBT Pride Month! Lots to report on THIS week's show, but first a note on NEXT week's show. Ann and I will be taking a week off and marking the 25th anniversary of the passage of the NYC lesbian and gay rights bill by screening a documentary on the subject, "Rights and Reactions: Lesbian and Gay Rights on Trial" by the late Phil Zwickler and the very much alive Jane Lippman. The film looks at the battle over the bill in 1986, fifteen years after it was introduced as the first piece of legislation proposing to ban discrimination based on "sexual orientation." In the midst of the early years of the AIDS crisis, the bill finally passed. BREAKING: After we taped on Tuesday, Illinois issued its first civil union licenses this morning, launching a historic day for same-sex couples across the state. Janean Watkins and Lakeesha Harris camped overnight outside the Daley Center to be the first in line in Cook County when the state's new civil unions law kicked in. (Nancy Stone/Chicago Tribune). A new Gallup poll found that a majority of Americans thinks that 25% of their fellow Americans are gay or lesbian. A Texas court voids the marriage of a transgendered woman whose husband died fighting a fire. The federal government issues new guidelines to help protect transgendered employees. A marriage equality supporting Democrat wins a special election for Congress in upstate New York in one of the most Republican districts in the country. NY's Mayor Bloomberg gives a speech supporting marriage equality, but refuses to stop donating big bucks to the anti-gay Republicans who are holding it up. A gay boy in Maine is elected prom queen at his small town HS and his boyfriend king. We'll have a video news report. Hank Plante, an out gay veteran reporter who covered AIDS from the beginning, returns to KCBS for a series of reports on the epidemic.
