GRITtv: Andrew Bacevich: Serious Thinking About US Military Action
According to retired Colonel Andrew Bacevich, Barack Obama "is a problem solver, he's surrounded himself with problem solvers at a time when maybe we need some creative thinking." This week saw the announcement that General David Petraeus would be taking Leon Panetta's spot as head of the CIA, while Panetta would be moving to replace Robert Gates as Defense Secretary. Bacevich joins Laura in studio to discuss the changes in the administration and the ongoing situation in Libya and Syria, and notes that at a time when the Arab world is undergoing deep changes, it should be a time for modesty in the US and a reconsideration of military power and the use of violence to achieve goals.
GRITtv: The F Word: Top Secret: Privatizing Fails
The Washington Post has a new series out on “Top Secret America,” investigating the massive security complex that's sprung up around our war industry. While independent journalists like Tim Shorrock and Jeremy Scahill have been reporting on this for years, the Post brings a new level of attention to the contractors—and the blank check they get from our otherwise deficit-obsessed government.
GRITtv: Lt. General Ricardo Sanchez: Facing Torture
Ricardo Sanchez was the highest-ranking Latino in the U.S. Army when he retired in 2006, after having been commander of ground forces in Iraq during a critical period of the war--and during the period when abuses at Abu Ghraib occurred. Since his retirement, he has called for a truth commission to investigate torture, and, he says, "Americans need to face up to" what happened there. Lt. General Sanchez joins Laura in studio to discuss the ongoing debates over torture, the serious questions facing military officers in the field, and the unwillingness of Obama to look back over the conduct of the Iraq war.
GRITtv: June 8 2010
"There is still anxiety around our first African-American president," says Mallika Dutt, executive director of Breakthrough. As immigration becomes a major issue once again, issues of race and citizenship get elided into one another, and media narratives contribute to the confusion. Mallika also notes that it is easier to crack down on immigrants (sending ICE to check up on workers cleaning up BP's mess) than oil companies, and that activists around these issues need to work together as civil disobedience rises around the country. Ricardo Sanchez was the highest-ranking Latino in the U.S. Army when he retired in 2006, after having been commander of ground forces in Iraq during a critical period of the war--and during the period when abuses at Abu Ghraib occurred. He says that the U.S. needs to face up to torture, and that a lack of accountability led us there. After the video hit YouTube of eighty-nine year old reporter Helen Thomas, telling an interviewer that Israelis should “get out of Palestine” and go back to Poland and Germany and other places, the White House issued an immediate condemnation. "Reprehensible" was their word. In the ritual flagellation that's followed, one can't help thinking that the grande dame of the White House press corps would have gotten less grief if she'd purposely cheated the financial system and took taxpayer money to recover.

GRITtv: Bumbling Buggers or Intelligence Operatives?
Yesterday, Laura called our attention to the strange tale of the attempt at bugging Sen. Mary Landrieu's New Orleans office, noting the stories uncovered by indie reporters connecting the dots between the ACORN sting, the break-in, and funding flowing into universities from the nation's intelligence agencies -- as well as right-wing organizations. David Price wrote a piece in Counterpunch, "Silent Coup," about the intelligence operations on campus, and Lindsay Beyerstein uncovered the connection between one of the Landrieu arrestees and those same programs; her work was cited in Raw Story's "Landrieu Phone Plot: Men Arrested have Links to Intelligence Community." They joined us to talk about the disturbing layers to this story, and discuss where it goes next.
