"Vulnerable Democrats are begging donors for cash -- $2,400 at a time, while their colleagues are sitting on millions of dollars they could unleash with a pen stroke." So wrote Erica Payne of the Agenda Project, pointing out that the control of the entire House could be in the hands of a few Democrats in safe seats. That's just one of the problems with a severely dysfunctional election system overly dependent on private cash, notes Chris Hayes of The Nation, who joins Payne and Laura for a discussion of the campaign season thus far, and the potential for a little bit of money to go a long way in the right place. According to Stephen F. Cohen, half of Russia looks back to Josef Stalin as a great leader and the other half as a genocidal murderer. This disconnect, and a longing for a stronger, secure state, can be seen in public debate over a memorial to the victims of the gulags, where more people died than in Hitler's death camps. Cohen tells the story of the victims and their struggle to reenter society in his new book, The Victims Return: Survivors of the Gulag After Stalin. Born of more than 30 years of research and personal experience, the book is a memoir as well as a history, and Cohen joins Laura in studio to discuss it, and the ongoing struggle to reconcile that period in Russian history. Last week, The Nation uncovered evidence that Lou Dobbs, famed immigrant basher, had in fact employed undocumented immigrants on his estates. Dobbs' daughter is a championship equestrian, and Isabel Macdonald, the reporter for the magazine, spoke to several men who said they cared for horses owned by Dobbs while they were working in the country without authorization. Betsy Reed, executive editor of The Nation, stopped by the GRITtv studio to give us her thoughts on the controversy.

GRITtv: Who Asks the Real Questions?

The biggest media news this week came last night when it was announced that Lou Dobbs would be leaving his CNN program. Yet there were plenty of other questions to ask this week about news coverage, and Jon Stewart can't be the only one critiquing the major media outlets. Rose Aguilar, of Your Call Radio, John R. MacArthur, president and publisher of Harper's magazine, Dan Gross, columnist at Newsweek, and Hendrik Hertzberg of The New Yorker look at the media's biggest hits and misses of the past week.

Once again, the mainstream media missed the boat on a general strike in Puerto Rico, attempts to fearmonger around the census, and the continued standoff in Honduras. Joining us to discuss these issues and more are Roberto Lovato, Erica Gonzalez and Cathy Areu. Rana Husseini, who has been covering "honor killings" in her native Jordan, speaks about her experience and offers suggestions for what activists can do to help. In Puerto Rico last week, over 100,000 citizens marched in protest of Republican governor Luis Fortuño's job cuts. SEIU sent us video urging action in Congress, keeping the pressure on Fortuño to do right by Puerto Ricans.

GRITtv: Hey CNN, Choose: Lou Dobbs or Latinos in America

Even Geraldo Rivera thinks Lou Dobbs is an embarrassment to journalism. That's pretty impressive. Dobbs has built a reputation by bloviating against so-called "illegal aliens," praising vigilante groups like the Minutemen and even declaring that Mexico is now the enemy. Yet CNN appears to think that by broadcasting a special on "Latinos in America," it can make up for the fact that it gives Dobbs a platform to pontificate against immigrants. Well, the Basta Dobbs campaign isn't buying it, and we aren't either. Check out their video with our own Laura Flanders, and then take action!

One year on from the sinking of Lehman, and the conventional wisdom seems to be that we’ve moved away from the precipice. But not everyone is so sure. If anything has been preserved, if not enlarged, it is the deep inequalities of American capitalism. Not only that, but are the necessary regulations in place to prevent a second storm? Discussion with David Cay Johnston, author of "Free Lunch: How the Wealthiest Americans Enrich Themselves at Government Expense."
