GRITtv: Ray Stever: Remember Where You Came From

"People don't realize that by not belonging to the union, the only right they have on the job is the right to die. People don't understand that the collective bargaining agreements and the right to organize protects them," said Ray Stever, President of the New Jersey Industrial Union Council. Speaking at the We Are One rally in Newark, New Jersey, Stever connected the dots between the old Congress of Industrial Organizations, the 29 mine workers at Massey Energy's Upper Big Branch mine, killed one year ago, and the current attacks on public workers in New Jersey and beyond. On April 4, GRITtv traveled to Newark, New Jersey for the We Are One rally, speaking with workers, racial justice activists, and leaders from the new national movement. Why New Jersey? Hetty Rosenstein of the Communication Workers of America filled us in on Governor Chris Christie. “He's anti union, he opposes collective bargaining, he's for the rich, he cut taxes on rich people by $9000 each while cutting services to those who are most vulnerable.” Laura spoke with Hetty about Christie's attacks on collective bargaining, about the need for a broader, wider coalition to fight for working people, and more. GRITtv: Estina Baker & Joyce Simmons: Coming Together

"It makes good common sense that people of common interest would come together," said Estina Baker of the We Are One rallies this week. "It's sort of history repeating itself in a very positive way," she notes, pointing out that the civil rights movement and workers' rights movement have a long history together. Laura spoke with Estina and Joyce Simmons, both of the NAACP, in Newark, New Jersey, about the movement begun at the One Nation rally last year and continuing now across the country. GRITtv: Feb. 17, 2011

"This is a national plan of action designed to take women back to a time when we had second class status as persons," Lynn Paltrow says of the ongoing attempts by conservatives around the country to shut down abortion rights by any way they can think of: fetal personhood, banning taxpayer funding, defunding Planned Parenthood, and making it "justifiable homicide" to kill an abortion provider. The outrage against these bills is gaining ground, though, and Lynn notes that when people wake up to the assaults on their rights, they fight back. She joins Laura in studio to discuss."There is only one state employee I'd like to see laid off, and that's Scott Walker," says Milwaukee's Ellen Bravo, who helped lead a successful campaign in Wisconsin for family leave that is now being attacked by Governor Walker's administration. GRITtv: Fighting For Respect for New Jersey's Public Workers

"It seems more like a class war to the folks that live in New Jersey," says Fran Ehret, President of the International Federation of Professional & Technical Engineers, Local 194 in New Jersey. And GRITtv Labor Correspondent Ed Ott notes "First they shrink the private sector wage pool, then they turn to the public sector and say 'You're the rich ones.'"New Jersey governor Chris Christie is one of a flock of Republican state officials making a name for themselves with bluster about busting public employee unions, and the turnpike workers represented by Ehret's union are one of his targets. We start our conversation about public sector workers here, with Ehret and Ott, and will continue it in the future. Send us your thoughts for future segments here or at our Facebook page .

Laura Flanders on MSNBC's Ed Show

Laura Flanders and Karen Hanretty debate "shutting down the government" with Ed Schultz on Tuesday, November 9. "It's not the attention-getting threats to shut government down that Democrats should be worried about; it's what the GOP extremists will do while they're at work that should have Americans scared to death" says Flanders. They also discuss New Jersey Governor Chris Christie's spending and cutting regime.

GRITtv: Hydrofracking for Natural Gas

Hydraulic fracturing for natural gas in Pennsylvania and New York is a heated topic. Whose power? Whose water? And just how natural is natural gas anyway? On the search for cheap clean energy, natural gas drilling has been sold as a solution. But is it? Affected communities are split. GRITtv's Sarah Friedland and Isabel Braverman went to the Delaware River Basin Commission's Headquarters in West Trenton, New Jersey to hear from residents, including actor Mark Ruffalo.

GRITtv: Got Docs: The Rink

Branch Brook Park roller rink, located in Newark, NJ, is one of the few remaining urban rinks of its kind. Serving extremely diverse subcultures within Newark, this space is a microcosm of the city that surrounds it. This film will follow three characters from distinct groups that use the space; a Skate Dancer, a Gospel Skater, and a Roller Derby Girl. Despite their differences in race, class, religion, and sexuality, these skaters are united by the rink, which serves as a refuge from the stress of their lives. Newark is currently experiencing a 'renaissance', but it is unclear who this renaissance is actually meant to benefit. The rink stands in symbolic and visual opposition to the pervasive, inflexible, and false notions attached to the city of Newark. The Rink is directed and produced by GRITtv's own Sarah Friedland and Ryan Joseph, and you can contribute to finishing the film at Kickstarter.

GRITtv: Homeless in the Woods

As part of our new format here at GRITtv, we plan to bring you more field reports. To kick that off, our own Sam Alcoff went to Lakewood, New Jersey, between New York and Philadelphia, to visit a homeless encampment in the woods. Last year, the National Alliance to End Homelessness warned that one and a half million people would be added to the nation's already sizable homeless population by the end of 2010. These are just a few of their stories.
