Demonstrators are marching on Wall Street today on the third day of a campaign dubbed "Occupy Wall Street," which began on Saturday when thousands gathered in New York City’s Financial District. We play a video report on the protest by Democracy Now!'s Sam Alcoff and get a live update from the streets from Nathan Schneider, editor of the blog "Waging Nonviolence," and speak with David Graeber, an anthropologist who participated in the activities. In Yemen, the government’s violent crackdown on protesters has intensified, leading to the bloodiest two days in several months. At least 21 protesters have been killed today in the capital of Sana’a. On Sunday, 26 demonstrators were gunned down and hundreds were injured. We go to Yemen for an update from Abdul Ghani al Iryani, a political analyst based in Sana’a and co-founder of the Democratic Awakening Movement. As the manhunt for Col. Muammar Gaddafi continues, MIT Professor Emeritus Noam Chomsky questions the legality of the continued NATO bombing campaign. Chomsky also talks about the relationship between Turkey and Egypt, long key allies for Israel, and how the deterioration of their relations "contributes very substantially to Israel’s isolation in the region." GRITtv: The Good Example
The economy's still struggling, and millions of Americans are desperate for work. And there are some people who are stuck with an even harder time than most. "Have you ever been convicted of a felony?"
GRITtv: Glassphemy: Creative Recycling
Broken glass is a hazard of city living. It's everywhere. So when a meeting of architects and urban planners were trying to come up with uses for vacant lots around New York, one of their chief challenges was figuring out what to do with the glass. David Belt and his company Macro-Sea took a comment from an attendee at the meeting, Bethany Edwards, who suggested creating a place where people could go to break glass. Ready-Made magazine, which cosponsored a contest to find uses for the broken glass, describes the location as "Part game, part art installation, part mobile recycling center, Glassphemy! is a 20-by-30-foot steel structure lined with bulletproof glass." We at GRITtv don't care what they call it, we thought it sounded fun and our own Sam Alcoff and Isabel Braverman took a trip to check it out. GRITtv: Doormen in New York Fight for Recognition
New York City braced last week for a strike by the doormen of the Service Employees International Union's local 32BJ. Late negotiations might have prevented the strike for now, but GRITtv was on the scene as the mobilization grew and we're happy to bring you this report on their struggle. A special thanks to Anna Gold and Zuhal Danyildiz for this report. GRITtv: Iraqi Performance Artist Wafaa Bilal's "...and Counting"
Continuing our coverage of the seventh anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, we bring you artist Wafaa Bilal. This Iraqi-American, who has lost family members in the conflict, garnered headlines around the world in 2007 when he lived in a gallery for 30 days with a webcam and a Web-controlled paintball gun: anyone around the world could try and shoot an Iraqi with a yellow paintball--and over 65,000 paintballs, from over 130 countries, were shot his way. GRITtv's Sam Alcoff visited Wafaa Bilal as he performed his new piece "...and Counting."
GRITtv: Stella D'Oro Workers Take on Goldman Sachs
Stella D’Oro workers in the Bronx who recently won a long fought legal battle after striking for months have been told that their plant has been sold to a company, Lance, Inc. in Chicago, and will be shutting its doors. Goldman Sachs is an investor in the company.
