GRITtv: Katha Pollitt: Sex, the Pope, and Sarah Palin

Sarah Palin is busily trying to sell "conservative feminism" to the masses, but her idea of feminism certainly doesn't include reproductive choice or sexual freedom. Meanwhile, even the Pope has decided that it's better for sex workers to use condoms than to risk getting HIV or other sexually transmitted infections. So why does the new Congress include more new members opposed to women's right to control their bodies? Katha Pollitt, Nation columnist and longtime prochoice activist, joins Laura in studio for a conversation about the latest on reproductive and sexual justice, Palinism, and more.

GRITtv: Dr. Joycelyn Elders: Marijuana & Masturbation

Dr. Joycelyn Elders is no stranger to making controversial statements in public, so her support of California's Proposition 19, the marijuana legalization ballot initiative, shouldn't be surprising. After all, years ago she was ousted as Bill Clinton's Surgeon General after noting that a discussion of masturbation should be part of educating young people on avoiding HIV infection. Elders joins us via Skype from Arkansas, where she is professor emeritus at the University of Arkansas School of Medicine and an associate at Arkansas Children's Hospital, to discuss marijuana legalization, the return of masturbation as a campaign issue, and the ongoing struggle for universal health care in the U.S. Distributed by Tubemogul.

GRITtv: Lynn Harris & Dr. Elizabeth Miller: Reproductive Coercion

Bristol Palin's infamous pregnancy has gone from being an example of conservative values hypocrisy to a reality TV show. Though we hear about many women who aren't educated on contraception or mysteriously "forget" to take their birth control, we rarely hear the other side: men who hoard birth control to deliberately impregnate their sexual partners. Typically, these men do not want to start a loving, young nuclear family. Instead, they want to assert their control from "leaving behind a legacy" to making sure they have as many "baby mamas" as possible to assert status within gangs. If a woman suggests birth control, she is subject to more traditional forms of domestic rage and violence. Reproductive coercion is not a new or uncommon form of abuse, it is an underreported one. Author and Nation contributor Lynn Harris and UC Davis professor, researcher, and clinician Elizabeth Miller join us to discuss how to identify and combat this form of abuse.

GRITtv: The F Word: RNC Big Tent Includes Strippers

So maybe they're not so against stimulus after all. In fact, the Republican National Committee has been giving a little stimulus of their own to an overlooked demographic group: strippers. That's right, according to last year's financial filings, the RNC spent nearly $2000 at Voyeur West Hollywood last year. Scoping out the post Schwarzenegger candidate field? Well, maybe, but how open minded! Voyeur West's “a bondage-themed nightclub featuring topless women dancers imitating lesbian sex.” GRITtv with Laura Flanders brings participatory democracy onto your computer screen and into your living room, bridging the gap between audience and advocates. GRITtv: Scandal in Albany Again: David Paterson's Troubles

It wasn't that long ago that New York had a governor embroiled in scandal. Eliot Spitzer resigned in disgrace in 2008 and was replaced by David Paterson, who became New York's first African-American governor--and the second legally blind governor of any state. Paterson is now in the midst of his own scandal: accusations that he pressured a woman to change her story of abuse at the hands of one of his close aides. He's already said he won't run for reelection, but should he become the second governor in two years to step down? Joining guest host Esther Armah to discuss are Dan Gerstein of Gotham Ghostwriters and Forbes and Erica Gonzalez of El Diario/La Prensa.

GRITtv: Whose Choice Is It for STI Vaccinations?

A new bill is making its way through the New York state legislature that would give minors the ability to consent to vaccinations for sexually transmitted infections, like Gardasil, the HPV vaccine to prevent cervical cancer. But parents are unhappy with the bill because it would allow children as young as nine to receive the immunization. Joining guest host Esther Armah to discuss the bill and the implications and issues for parents and young people around the country are Rita Palma, founder of My Kids My Choice, and Corinne Carey, Public Policy Counsel for the New York Civil Liberties Union.

GRITtv: Sex Education in Utah

Did you know that in Utah, you're more likely to get chlamydia than the chicken pox or the flu? Well, a Republican State Senator, who says he's from the most conservative part of the state, is leading the fight to allow teachers to teach contraception. Thanks to StuartTV for the video.

GRITtv: The F Word: Sex Worker's Rights are Worker's Rights

If you see a bunch of people in your neighborhood carrying red umbrellas, it might not be about the weather. December 17 is the international day to end violence against sex workers, and the red umbrella has become a symbol of sex worker rights and safety. Why do we need such a day? Well, sex workers have long been targets. Part of what spurred Annie Sprinkle, author, activist and former sex worker to organize vigils on Dec.17 for the forgotten victims of the "Green River Killer." Now similar actions have bcome an annual event -- from Bangladesh to Toledo, Hong Kong to Halifax. There's lots to do... rules need to change. In Philadelphia just two years ago, a man accused of raping a sex worker was instead charged with ?theft of services" Because someone decided it's not rape anymore, it's a property crime, when the victim is a sex worker. Some sex workers around the world are organizing unions demanding legalization to make their work less dangerous, but all call for human rights as equal humans. Can any be free while all are not free? Sex workers say no one's safe as long as there's any category of person, or worker who under the law's considered fair game for brutal treatment. Those who agree just might want to find their red brolly.  - Laura Flanders

GRITtv: The F Word: Stupak is a Step Back

The House passed its version of health-care legislation Saturday night by a vote of 220 to 215 after the approval of an amendment which amounts to a not-very-back door abortion ban for everyone but the very rich. It's sexist, it's classist, it goes well beyond the heinous Hyde Amendment ban on public funding for abortion--and it passed with the support of 64 Democrats, roughly a quarter of the caucus. The House move had less to do with majority than it had to do with theocracy. Why is it that from Bangor to the Beltway, church pressure works on even liberal Democrats, even as no politician in America seems to be afraid of losing votes over being anti-choice? And it's not too late for the liberal campaign contributors to close their wallets until they find out.
