GRITtv: The Harvest: Farming Sustainably in New York

Eating less meat might be better for the world, but it can definitely be delicious. Buckwheat is actually a fruit, a grain substitute that can be excellent for those with gluten sensitivities, or just a nice alternative to the usual. GRITtv's Danya Abt and Zac Halberd took a trip up to Ithaca, NY to visit the buckwheat fields, where Erick Smith, Greg Mol and Shane Hardy of Cayuga Organics took her from the field to the flour mill, introducing us to the challenges of sustainable farming and its many rewards. Thanks to Kevin McHugh and the Andrew Oliver Kora Band for the music! Distributed by Tubemogul.

GRITtv: Ben Evans: Your Environmental Road Trip

In the wake of the BP oil deluge in the Gulf and the Chevron oil spill in Utah, calls for renewable energy and sustainable living have been redoubled, with even President Obama getting into the act. To see what sustainable living can actually look like, Ben Evans, Julie Dingman Evans and Mark Dixon took a road trip across the U.S. in a hybrid car with only a few rules: they created less than one shoebox of garbage each month, never turned on an incandescent light, and used approximately 25 gallons of water per person per day. Laura caught up with Ben Evans to talk about the project, called YERT: Your Environmental Road Trip. The crew are working to finish their documentary on their adventure and looking for donations, if you'd like to chip in.

GRITtv: Spelling Sustainability: Brower Youth Awards

The Earth Island Institute created the annual Brower Youth Awards to honor six young people for their outstanding activism and achievements in the fields of environmental and social justice advocacy. Each winner is awarded $3000 and brought to San Francisco for the award week and a backcountry camping trip. Adarsha Shivakumar used his proceeds from winning a spelling bee to co-found a project growing sustainable jatropha, a plant that can be used as biofuel, in India. His work provides an ecologically friendly and economically profitable crop for farmers who would otherwise grow tobacco, a much more harmful plant. This video from Rikshaw Films shows the impact Shivakumar and his project have had around the world.
