Against US Military Interventions

Is the United States a murderous imperial power, condemning hundreds of thousands, even millions of people to death for its own economic benefit? Or is it merely attempting to insure the security of its citizens and bring a Pax Americana to the world? In either case, Republicans, Democrats and the Bush Administration are openly and aggressively threatening preemptive strikes and the first use of nuclear weapons against declared enemies and challengers. They are stripping Americans of their civil liberties, creating massive spy systems and targeting immigrants for harrassment, jail and deportation. What's going on?

In just the last 50 years the US has intervened overtly or covertly in: Iran 1953, Korea 1953-56, Guatemala 1954, Vietnam 1963-1975, Laos and Cambodia 1970-75, Granada 1983, Nicaragua 1979-1990, El Salvador, 1980s, Panama 1989, Iraq 1991, Somalia 1992, Colombia 2000- ongoing, Philippines 2002, Iraq 1992-ongoing. Why?

Good vs Evil: Bush's Theology of War
In September 2002, the Bush Administration released the National Security Strategy of the United States of America. The document outlines the Bush Administration's 9 basic objectives for the war on terror. Among these, the Administration states that it will enforce "a single sustainable model for national success: freedom, democracy and free enterprise." The government also declared that any nation that supports or harbors terrorists places their sovereignty at risk-in other words, the U.S. will take their nation away. We bring you a Free Speech TV production that examines the Bush Administration's stated goals.

Laure Reichek on Hate
Shortly after the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon last year, Northern California activist, homeless shelter founder and Woman In Black activist, Laure Reichek went before a camera to share her thoughts about the way national support was being drummed up for a military response. As the gut-level impulse to retaliate was being officially condoned and legitimized, Laure wanted to talk about her experiences in World War II, to describe how she worked through her immediate reaction to hate the "enemy," offering a powerful example of how we too can, and must, break the spiral of violence that threatens us all.

If You're Not Outraged, You Haven't Been Paying Attention
October 26, Washington DC.
The New York Times, National Public Radio and other corporate media first reported that 10,000 people showed up at this massive demonstration called by the International Answer Coalition. That was a lie. The cameras of OHMS Media provide ample evidence of the crowd size. More importantly, this video shows the voice of the people, why they came to this demonstration and their concerns, fears and hopes for the future. Most of all it shows the growing, deep opposition to America's military maurading.

One Million People Say No To War in Italy!
November 10,2002 Florence, Italy
The US Government's war mongering against Iraq and threats to the rest of the world have sparked a fierce upsurge of resistance in Europe. Hundreds of thousands have taken the streens to voice their opposition. In Italy, now ruled by the neo-fascist media mogul Sylvio Berlesconi, another Bush buddy, one of the largest demonstrations in recent European history said no to war on Iraq. News of the demo was, not surprisingly, censored in the US.

TAKE ACTION !

Action Alert #1:
Pledge your resistance to US war in Iraq!
Don't believe the war hype! Make your personal pledge to oppose the plans of the United Corporations of America! Remember that a commitment to peace starts at home, and that every mass movement must be built one person at a time.

After September 11, 2001, a group of people gathered in New York to "build the kind of movement that can extend a hand to the people of the world and stop the horrors being unleashed by our own government." Founded in March of 2002 with the launch of the Pledge of Resistance, the Not In Our Name Project strives to inspire anti-war resistance. Read the Pledge of Resistance and develop concrete ways you can use it to build the peace movement. Not In Our Name suggests several different ways the Pledge can be used:

  • Student organizations, trade unions, religious congregations and professional organizations could adopt the Pledge.
  • Meetings and gatherings of all kinds could end (or begin) with the Pledge recited aloud by everyone.
  • Sermons could be written around it;
  • The Pledge could be printed in community newspapers and organization newsletters all over the country. Letters-to-the-editor could also discuss its themes.

In addition, The People's Referendum Against War and the Iraq Peace Pledge can also be used as organizing tools to oppose the US-led war on Iraq. You can sign both of these pledges on-line, and you can print out copies to share with your community.

Action Alert #2:
Volunteer with peace organizations in your community!

While peace groups have many different perspectives on international conflict and their activities take many different forms, one thing they all have in common is their reliance on volunteers. Volunteer your time to help build a world that recognizes the dignity of each person!
The National Network to End the War against Iraq is a coalition of social justice groups across the country, each with a commitment to "charting a 'new way' to peace between the US and the Iraqi People." The Network's website provides a list of local groups that are eager for your involvement. If you don't see your local peace organization listed, contact the National Network and tell them about your group. If there is no group in your area, start one yourself!

Action Alert #3:
Organize a "teach-in" in your school, community center, or place of worship!

Educate & activate! Teach-ins provide a valuable opportunity to attract new people and build anti-war coalitions. Be sure to discuss specific non-violent solutions to international conflict and strategize on how best to rally your community around the peace movement.

Action Alert #4:
Participate in the mass demonstrations taking place across the country!
Free Speech TV urges you to attend a protest and voice your dissent! The only way the US government will change its war doctrine is if millions of Americans demonstrate against it! You are not alone! A mass movement is building, so show up early and often!

International ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) organized the successful October 26th rally in Washington DC that attracted 150,000+ people (which the New York Times and NPR initially reported as only a few thousand!). ANSWER has now called for a national "Mass Demonstration and Grassroots Peace Congress" on Saturday, January 18th and Sunday, January 19th in Washington, DC. This mobilization is timed to correspond with the Martin Luther King, Jr. anniversary weekend, as well as the anniversary of the start of the 1991 Gulf War. ANSWER's website includes helpful information for endorsing and for coordinating the logistical details of traveling to the demonstration.

The National Network to End the War also offers a list of many local anti-war demonstrations [http://www.endthewar.org/wgs/action_wg/local.htm] taking place around the US. Find out what's happening in your community, and make sure its activities are listed here.
