God Respects Us When We Work But Loves Us When We Dance
"The Sixties" were a time when we knew we could change the world - because we were doing it. Millions of youth across the world shook off the encrusted stagnation of tradition's chains. They challenged authority, they spoke truth to power. They came to understand that love should not be a prison, but a liberation, that sex was not sin but deep and human pleasure and bond. They kenw that the war mongers who stared at them from on high were evil. They embraced peace and love. Les Blank's classic documents the historic Los Angeles "Love-In" of Easter Sunday 1967. It displays the energy and idealism of a generation that began to chart a road to the future.

TAKE ACTION !
Action Alert #1:
Learn from indigenous cultures to cherish the Earth you share with others
Impending wars, environmental devastation, economic chaos, and all the other disturbing news that the media present can result in hopelessness and fear. But there is hope, and there are ancient traditions dedicated to the sort of healing process that's needed for global peace and environmental restoration. The World Council of Elders is an organization that preserves and disseminates indigenous teachings on creating peace, and offers practical solutions to the grave ecological problems facing the earth's peoples. Read more about the World Council of Elders, and consider integrating their ancient wisdom to create harmony in your part of the world.
Action Alert #2:
Bring spirituality into your activism through "interfaith celebrations" and other practices.
We're often encouraged to separate our quest for personal growth and spiritual development from our collective work for justice. But does this make sense? How can a political movement comprised of individuals cut off from any kind of spiritual base succeed? Since its inception in the spring of 1995, Stone Circles has helped to align political activism with core spiritual values. Offering a wealth of information on its website, Stone Circles provides innovative ways to integrate faith, spiritual practice, and political activism. If you are interested in adding a spiritual dimension to your activism, consider contacting Stone Circles for information on workshops and trainings.
Action Alert #3:
Help your local school add "peace studies" to its curriculum.
Mahatma Gandhi said, "If we are to reach real peace in this world, we shall have to begin with the children." Unfortunately, most schools in the United States neglect to educate students about the most important fact of life: that we must learn to live harmoniously with the natural world and with each other.
One organization that is working to provide students with the tools to live harmoniously with the natural world and their communities is the Children's Peace Academy. Building on principles of self-awareness, environmental sustainability, peace studies, and global citizenship, the visionaries at the Children's Peace Academy hope to usher in a new age for education in this country. For more information on establishing this sort of curriculum at your child's school (or your own), contact The Children's Peace Academy at (541) 685-1335 or info@eugenepeaceacademy.org.
And don't forget to use the vast resources posted here at www.freespeech.org, featuring articles, links, and a large collection of audio and video content on the many struggles for peace and justice that have emerged around the world.
Action Alert #4:
Stop domestic violence by volunteering at a women's shelter.
Few realize that domestic violence is the #1 cause of injury to women, and the #1 cause of homicide. Clearly, a problem of this magnitude requires coordinated public policy and education initiatives at the local, state, and national levels to eradicate the social conditions that contribute to violence.
Volunteers are also needed to protect and assist women and children at shelters around the country. If you would like to find a shelter in your area, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233). The National Coalition against Domestic Violence serves as a national information and referral center for the general public, the media, and for battered women and children. The NCADV also provides technical assistance and program consultation to organizations around the country. If you are interested in working with a local organization to effect policy change, the NCADV has compiled a state-by-state listing of anti-violence organizations.
