VICTORY! SCOTUS Rules In Favor Of Love, Legalizes Marriage Equality Nationwide

It is currently 10:02 a.m. on Friday, June 26, 2015, and MSNBC just announced live that the Supreme Court has decided that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry. To be explicit: This means that same-sex couples have the right to marry in all 50 states. It is now the law of the land. Marriages must be performed. The 5-4 decision was written by Justice Anthony Kennedy, which is certainly fitting, considering that he is often the swing vote in these decisions. Using the 14th amendment, Justice Kennedy ruled in favor of love. You can read the entire decision here (PDF).

To put into context just how amazing this is I’ll give a bit of a personal story. I came out of the closet in 1996. At that point in time, we were just getting the AIDS cocktail that is the modern base for HIV and AIDS treatment. LGBT people, specifically gay men, were still being blamed for the epidemic. I was not allowed to take a girl to my junior or senior prom a couple of years later. When I graduated high school and went to college in 1999, campus security turned a blind eye to anti-LGBT discrimination and harassment, and LGBT students were banned from many events on campus, with no recourse. Certainly, considering these things, nobody was thinking that we’d ever have the right to marry.

Well, here we are, so many years later, with the highest court in the land declaring our love legal. This just goes to show that anything is possible if we all stand united and fight hard for what is right, no matter how unpopular it might be at any given point in time.

And, of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the congratulatory tweet from President Obama, who is easily the most LGBT-friendly president to ever occupy the White House:

Yes, Mr. President, #LoveWins. It is indeed a happy day. I’d be willing to bet LGBTQ people and our allies across the nation and world are crying tears of happiness right now. I know I am. Congratulations everyone, and Happy Pride!
