We Will Not Be Silenced: The Academic Repression of Israel’s Critics

GUEST: William Robinson, professor of sociology, global and international studies, and Latin American studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is also the editor of, and a contributor to a new anthology called We Will Not Be Silenced: The Academic Repression of Israel's Critics

BACKGROUND: In the past decade or so, college and university campuses in the US have become fertile grounds for public education campaigns about the Israeli occupation and domination of Palestinians.

Student groups have organized conferences, expanded campaigns for the boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement against Israeli Apartheid.

Professors and lecturers have shed light on what is really happening on the ground in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories, and challenged students to see through the media bias on this issue.

But just as successful as these movements have been, the individuals involved have faced harsh criticism, silencing, and even persecution.

A new book collects the stories of rampant silencing of Israel's critics in the academy, from the stories of Steven Salaita to the Irvine 11.
