Blood & Oil: The Dangers & Consequences of America's Dependency on Imported Petroleum

by Michael T. Klare

With America's oil wells drying up, Klare states most of our country's supply will have to come from unstable, anti-American zones, and our dependency on oil is bound to lead to recurrent military involvement.

American Jobs (DVD)

American Jobs is a personal investigation of the "jobless recovery." In the first six months of 2004, Director Greg Spotts visited nineteen cities and towns across the US, interviewing workers who had recently lost their jobs due to low-wage foreign competition. His heartfelt documentary reveals families and communities left behind by the brave new world of Outsourcing and Offshore Manufacturing. The film explores both blue-collar and white-collar occupations, interviewing workers in the garment, software, aerospace and textile industries. In their own words, the workers and their families describe their personal struggle to retrain for an uncertain future, and share their concerns about the health of the American Dream.

At the Tea Party: The Wing Nuts, Whack Jobs and Whitey-Whiteness of The New Republican Right...and Why We Should Take it Seriously (Book)

With contributions by a wide range of leading experts, At the Tea Party looks at who is behind the movement, its rich sources of funding, and the extensive use of new technology, its appeal to women, the pervasive racism that underpins much of its approach, and the lessons for the left of a political program that, though often incoherent, nonetheless taps into genuine anxiety.

Billy Bragg & Wilco, "Mermaid Ave" (CD)

A ghost, a band, a troubadour. British socialist and folkie Billy Bragg was given unprecedented access to Woody Guthrie's unrecorded lyrics. Teaming up with alt-country band Wilco and quoting from more than 50 years of country, folk, and rock music, Billy and company bring Guthrie's politics, poetry, and morality to the end of the century and prove he's as necessary now as ever.

Black Mask & Up Against the Wall MotherFucker (Book)

Chronicling the history of two New York City provocateur groups—Black Mask and Up Against the Wall, Motherfucker—this account complies the complete 10 issues of the newspaper Black Mask; numerous leaflets, articles, and flyers generated by Black Mask; the Up Against the Wall Motherfucker Magazine; and Free Press and Rolling Stone reports on Up Against the Wall, Motherfucker. Founded in the mid-1960s, the Black Mask group melded the ideas and inspiration of Dada with the anarchism of the Spanish Revolution, and this volume demonstrates how they heavily influenced the art, politics, and culture of the decade as they briefly shut down the Museum of Modern Art, protested Wall Street, battled at Students for a Democratic Society conferences, and defended the shooting of Andy Warhol.

Carbon Nation (DVD)

Bypassing politics and fingerpointing, this forward-thinking documentary zeroes in on enterprising individuals -- from a wind farmer to a solar-panel retrofitter -- who are devising business-minded ways to avert the looming climate crisis. The cross-country expedition yields encounters with Virgin Group CEO Richard Branson, Earth Day founder Denis Hayes and former CIA director James Woolsey, along with everyday pioneers in low-carbon living.

Gas Hole (DVD)

What caused America to go from being a leading exporter of oil to the world s largest importer? What are the economic and sociological forces that have contributed to that change and impede its solution? Gas Hole is an eye-opening documentary about the history of oil prices and sheds light on a secret that the big oil companies don t want you to know that there are viable and affordable alternatives to fuel! It also provides a detailed examination of our continued dependence on foreign oil and examines various potential solutions -- starting with claims of buried technology that dramatically improves gas mileage, to navigating bureaucratic governmental roadblocks, to evaluating different alternative fuels that are technologically available now, to questioning the American Consumers reluctance to embrace alternatives

Directed by Spike Lee, this four-hour, Peabody Award-winning documentary revisits New Orleans five years after Hurricane Katrina, and four years since the premiere of Lee's landmark, triple Emmy-winning HBO documentary, When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts. Featuring many of the principals seen in the first documentary, the new film opens with February's celebratory Super Bowl parade before delving into such issues as relocation, rebuilding, mental-health concerns, the current status of the levees, and the impact on New Orleans of the recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America (Book)

Millions of Americans work full time, year round, for poverty-level wages. In 1998, Barbara Ehrenreich decided to join them. She was inspired in part by the rhetoric surrounding welfare reform, which promised that a job -- any job -- can be the ticket to a better life. But how does anyone survive, let alone prosper, on $6 an hour? To find out, Ehrenreich left her home, took the cheapest lodgings she could find, and accepted whatever jobs she was offered. Moving from Florida to Maine to Minnesota, she worked as a waitress, a hotel maid, a cleaning woman, a nursing-home aide, and a Wal-Mart sales clerk.

Parti-Suds Political Soaps

Reviving the Strike: How Hard Working People Can Regain Power and Transform America (Book)

In Reviving the Strike, labor lawyer Joe Burns draws on economics, history and current analysis in arguing that the labor movement must redevelop an effective strike based on the now outlawed traditional labor tactics of stopping production and workplace-based solidarity. The book challenges the prevailing view that tactics such as organizing workers or amending labor law can save trade unionism in this country. Instead, Reviving the Strike offers a fundamentally different solution to the current labor crisis, showing how collective bargaining backed by a strike capable of inflicting economic harm upon an employer is the only way for workers to break free of the repressive system of labor control that has been imposed upon them by corporations and the government for the past seventy-five years.

RiP: A Remix Manifesto (DVD)

"In RiP: A Remix Manifesto, Web activist and filmmaker Brett Gaylor explores issues of copyright in the information age, mashing up the media landscape of the 20th century and shattering the wall between users and producers.  The film s central protagonist is Girl Talk, a mash-up musician topping the charts with his sample-based songs. But is Girl Talk a paragon of people power or the Pied Piper of piracy? Creative Commons founder, Lawrence Lessig, Brazil s Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil and pop culture critic Cory Doctorow are also along for the ride.  A participatory media experiment, from day one, Brett shares his raw footage at opensourcecinema.org, for anyone to remix. This movie-as-mash-up method allows these remixes to become an integral part of the film. With RiP: A remix manifesto, Gaylor and Girl Talk sound an urgent alarm and draw the lines of battle. Which side of the ideas war are you on?"

The Best Government Money Can Buy (DVD)

The Best Government Money Can Buy, is the first behind-the-scenes, comprehensive, non-partisan examination of the system of lobbying in Washington, DC. The cost of election campaigns has spiraled out of control, to the extent that, on average, our representatives spend more than 25% of their time fund-raising. Even our Presidents regularly interrupt the nation's work in order to spend time fund-raising! Veteran documentary film-maker, British-born Francis Megahy, makes a journey of discovery as he tries to answer some questions which puzzle him: who provides the money? What effect does it have? How is it connected to the financing of political campaigns? And most crucial, is it in the public interest? The Best Government Money Can Buy explores the issue through interviews with real Washington beltway insiders, key participants in the process - who often speak with surprising candor.

The Billionaire's Tea Party (DVD)

In Summer 2009, something stirred in America. After Barack Obama and a Democratic congress swept to power promising a new era of hope and change, out of nowhere the emergence of a citizens protest movement called the Tea Party threatened to derail their agenda. Was this uprising the epitome of grassroots democracy? Or was it, as some said, an example of “astroturfing” - the creation of fake grassroots groups, designed to put corporate messages in the mouths of seemingly independent citizens? The Billionaires’ Tea Party is both a journey through a unique moment in American history and a thoroughly researched piece of investigative journalism. Through an examination of astroturfing and disinformation, we see how citizen democracy has been captured by powerful corporate interests that threatens not only the heath of American democracy, but that of its citizens and the planet as a whole

Combining secret documents with accounts by victims, scientists and policy makers, she guides us through a web of misleading reports, pressure tactics, collusion, and attempted corruption. Rebooting the American Dream

In this work, Thom Hartmann covers 11 straightforward solutions to America's current problems. At the core of each is a call to reclaim economic sovereignty and to wrest control of democracy back from the corporate powers that have hijacked both America and her citizens.

What's particularly unique about Hartmann's solutions is that all have been proven to work. Every single one of his 11 steps either was historically part of what built America’s greatness in the past (such as enforcing the Sherman Act and breaking up big corporations or returning to a tariff-based trade policy), or has worked well in other nations (like a national single-payer healthcare system —Medicare Part "E" for "Everybody"—or encouraging the growth of worker-owned cooperatives like the $6 billion Mondragon cooperative in Spain).

Hartmann's solutions are essentially nonpartisan. Virtually all have been promoted at one time or another in American history by both political parties, although today most (but not all) fall into the realm of "progressive solutions." Both Ralph Nader and Pat Buchanan will find broad areas of agreement with this book.

From addressing the problem of a warming globe to the death of America's middle class to the loss of our essential liberties, Rebooting The American Dream shows how America can reclaim the vision of our Founders and the greatness we held both at home and abroad for over a century.

Thom Hartmann
The Thom Hartmann Reader

Connecting the dots... Whether he is writing about presidential power or children with learning disabilities, Thom Hartmann is uniquely able to see the patterns and the root causes of our problems as a people. This book has been compiled from fourteen previously published sources in a completely new and original way. More than thirty different contributions have been included. Subjects include the environmental crisis, lost jobs, media control, sexism, healing democracy, the lessons of ADD, corporate power, the nature of community, and much more. With an introduction that pulls it all together, updates on Thom’s thinking throughout, and interesting editorial asides, this new volume makes for an amazing compilation of Thom’s best writing.

Unequal Protection

Was the Boston Tea Party the first WTO-style protest against transnational corporations? Did Supreme Court sell out America's citizens in the nineteenth century, with consequences lasting to this day? Is there a way for American citizens to recover democracy of, by, and for the people?

Thom Hartmann takes on these most difficult questions and tells a startling story that will forever change your understanding of American history. Amongst a deep historical context, Hartmann the describes the history of the Fourteenth Amendment--created at the end of the Civil War to grant basic rights to freed slaves--and how it has been used by lawyers representing corporate interests to extend additional rights to businesses far more frequently than to freed slaves. Prior to 1886, corporations were referred to in U.S. law as "artificial persons." But in 1886, after a series of cases brought by lawyers representing the expanding railroad interests, the Supreme Court ruled that corporations were "persons" and entitled to the same rights granted to people under the Bill of Rights. Since this ruling, America has lost the legal structures that allowed for people to control corporate behavior.
